The I-24 Bridge Work Zone at Metropolis, Illinois and What It Means for Truckers
IDOT has squeezed the mile long I-24 Ohio River Bridge between Metropolis and Paducah into a head to head work zone since March. Phase two is due to wrap October 13, phase three comes in 2027, and the nearest truck detour is a long way off. Here is what that means for your loads, your record, and your coverage.
Phase two of the I-24 bridge job is set to wrap October 13
If you run I-24 between southern Illinois and western Kentucky, the mile long Ohio River bridge between Metropolis and Paducah has been a single file squeeze since March 2. The Illinois Department of Transportation is rehabilitating the span in three seasons, and according to a February 2026 bulletin from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's District 1 office, the second season's lane restrictions were expected to run until October 13, 2026. That date is days away. It is a good moment to look at what this work zone has cost truckers so far, what it still could cost, and why the bridge will be back in the orange barrels next year.
None of this changes the price of commercial truck insurance in Illinois on its own. What it changes is the number of ways a routine crossing can turn into a claim, and the record that follows a crash in a marked work zone.

What IDOT is doing to the bridge
The project replaces expansion joints, lays a new concrete deck overlay, repairs structural steel, and repaints the bridge. The Kentucky bulletin put the cost at 38 million dollars, and FleetOwner reported in 2025 that the work is part of the Rebuild Illinois capital program and should add roughly 15 years of service life. The whole job is expected to finish in fall 2027.
Phase one ran from March 3 to December 12, 2025. That was about two months later than the mid October finish IDOT had first planned, because, as FOX23 KBSI reported in November 2025, crews found more repair needs than expected, including work on several floor beams. Keep that history in mind before you plan around October 13. A target date on a bridge rehab is a target, not a promise.
Why a head to head work zone is a different kind of risk
For phase two, all traffic was moved onto the westbound side of the bridge. Both eastbound lanes closed so crews could pour the new deck, and a temporary barrier down the middle of the westbound lanes now separates two way traffic. The bulletin listed a 10 foot 6 inch lane width restriction and a 55 mph limit on I-24 from mile point 7.5 to the bridge in both directions.
Think about what that means in a standard 8 foot 6 inch wide trailer. You have very little room on either side, a concrete barrier on one hand, and oncoming traffic just past it. Mirror strikes, trailer scrapes along the barrier, and sideswipes with a car that drifts over are the claims this setup produces. Those land on your physical damage coverage for your own unit and on your liability coverage for the other vehicle. The Kentucky cabinet also pointed out that once the head to head pattern is in place, one crash affects traffic in both directions, so a fender bender can strand loads going both ways.
A crash inside a posted work zone also tends to get scrutinized harder. Speed, following distance, and lane position all get measured against the work zone limits, not the normal interstate ones, and that record follows the claim.
The Brookport Bridge is not your detour
When I-24 backs up, the closest river crossing on the map is the U.S. 45 Brookport Bridge. Do not take a semi on it. FleetOwner reported that the bridge is limited to 15 tons, 8 feet wide, and 9 feet 6 inches tall, and an IDOT District 9 engineer said the ban on semis would be enforced by police. The cabinet repeated in 2026 that large commercial vehicles and semis are prohibited there.
The truck detour is the U.S. 51 Ohio River Bridge at Cairo, Illinois. FleetOwner put the nearest semi detour at about 86 miles, with Cairo about 36 miles away on the Kentucky side or 58 miles through Illinois. That gap matters on February 19, 2026 type days. Early that morning a barge struck the I-24 bridge and every lane was blocked until an IDOT inspector checked the piers, according to the cabinet. Cars could slip over to Brookport. Trucks could not.

Protecting your loads and your record through 2027
A few habits help. Check Getting Around Illinois or the Kentucky cabinet alerts before you commit to the crossing, and route your GPS around Brookport so it never suggests it. If you haul time sensitive or refrigerated freight, talk to the shipper about what a long Cairo detour does to your delivery window, because spoilage and late delivery disputes are exactly where motor truck cargo coverage and its exclusions get tested. Keep dash cam footage of any incident on the bridge. Lanes run toward Kentucky truck insurance territory on the other bank, so it is also worth confirming your policy and filings line up for both states.
The bridge reopens to four lanes for the winter once phase two wraps, then the third season brings the barrels back in 2027. IDOT had not published phase three dates in the reporting we found. Common questions
When do the I-24 Ohio River Bridge lane restrictions end in 2026?
A February 2026 Kentucky Transportation Cabinet bulletin said the phase two restrictions on the bridge between Metropolis, Illinois and Paducah, Kentucky were expected to last until October 13, 2026. Phase one ran about two months past its first target, so check current alerts before you count on the date. The full project is expected to finish in fall 2027.
Can a semi use the Brookport Bridge as a detour?
No. The U.S. 45 Brookport Bridge is closed to semis and large commercial vehicles because of weight, height, and width limits, and IDOT said police enforce it. The truck detour is the U.S. 51 bridge at Cairo, Illinois.
Does a work zone crash raise my truck insurance?
A crash can affect your renewal no matter where it happens, and a crash in a posted work zone tends to get extra scrutiny over speed and lane position. Clean driving and dash cam footage are your best protection. To see where you stand, get a truck insurance quote or call or text 423-264-4255.
Which coverages matter most on a narrowed bridge crossing?
Liability pays for damage you cause to other vehicles, physical damage covers your own tractor and trailer after a barrier or mirror strike, and cargo coverage responds when a load is damaged. A long detour can also put perishable freight at risk, so review your cargo terms with your agent.
