Jackson's Big Fix Puts Trucks in I-20 and I-55 Work Zones Through 2028
MDOT's $400 million I-20 and I-55 rebuild is underway in Jackson, with two full 45 day I-20 shutdowns ahead. Here is what it changes for owner-operators running the metro.
The Big Fix is moving from announcement to orange barrels
If you run freight through Jackson, Mississippi, the next two and a half years just got more complicated. The Mississippi Department of Transportation is now working on what it calls The Big Fix, the I-20 and I-55 Freight Corridors Improvement Project. MDOT announced it in late August, TheTrucker.com laid out the details on August 30, 2026, and this week Jackson station WJTV reported crews ramping up work inside the metro. The estimated price is about $400 million, and MDOT describes it as one of its most significant infrastructure investments in recent years.
This is not a generic overview of commercial truck insurance in Mississippi. It is about one specific stretch of interstate where two of the state's main freight corridors, I-20 and I-55, come together, and what a long work zone there does to your risk and your policy.

What is being rebuilt and where
The project covers four pieces of road. I-20 runs from Wiggins Road to just east of the Pearson Road and SR 468 interchange. I-55 runs from McDowell Road to north of the High Street interchange, including cross streets and ramps. I-220 is included from I-20 to the Lynch Street bridge, and U.S. 51 from I-55 to the end of state maintenance north of U.S. 80.
Inside those limits MDOT plans to rehabilitate 36 bridges, with work on decks, beams, girders, joints, bearings, piles and steel painting. It will resurface or repair 16 miles in each direction, which comes to 121 lane miles. It is also adding Intelligent Transportation System upgrades such as digital message signs, cameras and Smart Work Zone technology, according to TheTrucker.com and the Magnolia Tribune. MDOT Executive Director Brad White said the approach gets the job done in about two years instead of two decades.
The dates that matter for your schedule
For the rest of 2026, MDOT says most of the work will be lane closures at night and on weekends where possible. That is the phase starting now. If you run Jackson after dark, expect tapers down to a single lane, arrow boards, and stop and go traffic where you used to cruise.
The bigger hit comes later. MDOT plans two full 45 day shutdowns of I-20, one direction at a time. Westbound closes in summer 2027 and eastbound in summer 2028. That work includes shoulder widening, barrier work, and full depth pavement removal and replacement. MDOT has promised advance notice and marked detours, but it has not published the detour routes yet, so nobody can tell you today exactly which streets your truck will be sent down.
MDOT also said what happens if it does not do this work. Without the repairs it would likely have to lower weight restrictions or make emergency closures. For anyone hauling heavy through Jackson, a planned closure is the better of the two problems.
Why a work zone is an insurance story
Work zones change the kind of crash a truck is most likely to be in. Traffic slows and bunches up, lanes narrow, and a car can stop short or cut in at a taper with no room to spare. Rear end crashes and sideswipes are the classic work zone claims, and when a loaded truck is the vehicle in back, the injury side of that claim lands on your commercial auto liability. A work zone is also where plaintiff lawyers ask hard questions about following distance, speed and phone use, so a forward facing dash camera and clean logs are worth a lot here. White asked drivers to stay off their phones and keep speeds down even when traffic looks light, and that advice protects your insurance record as much as your safety.
Your own equipment matters too. Barrel strikes, barrier scrapes, debris and a tight squeeze past a construction trailer all fall under physical damage coverage for the truck and trailer. Without it, a bent bumper or a cracked fairing from a narrow lane comes out of your pocket.

Delay is not a covered loss
One thing to know before the shutdowns arrive. Motor truck cargo coverage pays for loss or damage to the freight, not for the time a closure costs you. If a detour makes you miss an appointment, a reefer load sits longer than planned, or a shipper charges you for a late delivery, that is usually a business cost and not a cargo claim. Build extra time into Jackson loads now, talk with brokers about realistic windows, and check MDOT's website and app before each run through the metro.
