What is moving your number

Why we will not pretend this is a quote

Every truck insurance calculator on the internet has the same problem. The three things that most determine your premium are your loss runs, your drivers' motor vehicle records, and an underwriter's read of your operation, and a calculator cannot see any of them.

So this tool does what it honestly can. It applies the rating factors that are predictable, which are your commodity, your radius, your fleet size, how long you have held authority, your drivers' experience level, and whether you have had claims. That gets you a realistic band. It will not get you a number to the dollar, and any site that gives you one is guessing with more confidence than the data supports.

Use the range to budget and to sanity check a renewal that feels wrong. Then let us shop it properly.

    What actually decides your premium

Loss history above everything. Three years of clean loss runs is the single most valuable asset a carrier has at renewal. One serious injury claim can outweigh every other favourable factor on this list combined. Nothing in this calculator matters as much.

Motor vehicle records. Underwriters pull them and they are unforgiving. A driver with a recent serious violation can price an entire small fleet out of a market. If you run one to five trucks, your hiring standard is your rate.

Time in business. New authority is the most expensive year you will have, and it is not personal. You simply have no record for anyone to judge, and statistically new carriers have more losses. Our page on new authority insurance requirements covers what to expect, and the good news is that this factor improves on its own if you stay clean.

Radius and territory. More miles and more congestion means more exposure. Report yours accurately, because a radius that does not match your ELD or IFTA data is exactly what an adjuster looks for after a serious loss. Our IFTA guide explains why those records tell the same story to everyone.

What you haul. Commodity drives both the severity of a cargo claim and the required liability limits. Hazmat tank work sits in a different regulatory tier entirely, which our MCS-90 page explains.

Equipment value and deductibles. Physical damage is priced off stated values, so keep them current. And if you are filing several small claims a year, a low deductible is quietly costing you more at renewal than it returns.

    What the estimate includes

It does not include general liability, occupational accident or workers compensation, excess liability above one million, or specialty items such as pollution coverage for tank operations. Those are real costs for many operations, so treat the range as a floor for a complete program rather than the whole picture.

    Calculator questions

    How accurate is this estimate?

It is a realistic band, not a quote. The calculator applies the rating factors that are predictable, meaning commodity, radius, fleet size, authority age, driver experience, and claim history. It cannot see your loss runs, your drivers' actual motor vehicle records, or an underwriter's judgement, and those are the biggest drivers of a real price. Expect your actual quote to land inside the range most of the time and outside it sometimes.

Why is new authority so much more expensive?

Because you have no history for an underwriter to evaluate, and new carriers statistically have more losses in their first two years. It is the single largest upward factor in the calculator for that reason. It is also temporary. Twelve months of clean operation with a documented loss run meaningfully improves your options, and twenty four months opens markets that will not look at a brand new authority at all.

Does the estimate include general liability or workers comp?

No. The range covers auto liability at a one million dollar combined single limit, motor truck cargo, and physical damage. General liability, occupational accident or workers compensation, excess liability, and specialty coverages such as pollution for tank operations are separate. Many operations genuinely need several of those, so treat this number as a floor for a complete program.

My renewal is way above this range. What now?

That usually means something in your file is driving it that the calculator cannot see, most often a claim, a driver with a bad record, or a carrier exiting your class. It can also mean you are simply with the wrong market. Either way it is worth shopping. Send us your DOT number and three years of loss runs and we will tell you whether the number is defensible or whether you are overpaying. Call or text 423-264-4255.

Can I get a real quote without a DOT number?

Yes, if you are in the process of setting up. We work with plenty of operators before their authority is active, and getting the insurance conversation started early actually helps, since your policy has to be in place for the filing that activates your authority. Tell us your target start date and what you plan to haul.
